Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert EVO

The EVO has a little more travel than the regular Stumpjumper FSR – up 5mm to 145mm (5.7in) at the back, up 10mm to 150mm (5.9in) at the front thanks to a Fox F150RL QR15 fork – but that’s not what makes such a difference to the bike’s capability.

While it may closely resemble the standard Stumpy, the EVO’s M5 aluminium frame is unique to it, with revised geometry and some extra features. The key change is that the head angle has been knocked back to 67 degrees. It also has a slightly lower bottom bracket, and ISCG mounts that aren’t found on the regular bike.

Choose the Stumpy EVO as your weapon and you’ll get a bunch of good stuff, such as the custom SRAM carbon cranks with 24/36t chainrings and a bashguard. You also get Roval Traverse wheels with 26mm wide rims.

Specialized’s Command Post is a remote adjustable seatpost with three positions – right up, slightly down and way down. The release lever is integrated into the inboard locking collar on one of the grips (you can run it either side).

The 2011 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR models debuted at the end of June with retuned S140 fork (26″) with no Brain inertia valve. The Fox shock trades Pro Pedal settings for a shock that’s designed around pedaling when on, as well as multiple compression damping settings when turned off, In order to allow tuning of the shock's characteristics for descending more than climbing.

2011 Specialized Stumpjumper S-Works 29er Carbon

The S-Works Stumpjumper hardtails, like the Epic, get carbon-rimmed Roval Control SL wheels, along with the more modern 2×10 drivetrain. The mid- and high-end models have stiffer wheels due to Specialized’s updated 90mm travel Future Shock with dropouts. These wheels are compatible with Specialized and Rockshox forks, and they have a OS24 caps in order to make them compatible with Fox forks.

The S-Works carbon frames weigh in 100g less than the 2010 model, at 1,055g for the 29er and 920g for the 26″ model. Shaped seatstays combined with a slim 27.2mm seatpost provide vertical compliance for both models. The 2011 Stumpjumper FSR and S-Works Carbon are great additions to the Stumpjumper line.

In the First Impressions post, I took a look at the four goals that Specialized laid out for this bike and gave my first impressions on whether or not those goals were met. A quick, snappy ride,and great balance- it will take sudden, hard climbs without slipping the rear wheel or lifting off. I occasionally ride a Trek Fuel 7, and by comparison, the Trek is an SUV, the Stumpjumper is a sports car. Precision handling, but a rougher ride. A sexy-looking bike. I have ridden this bike for three years in Moab, Fruita, and the Keystone bike park's intermediate runs, and have never, in three years, had a flat or broken any components except for a shifter in a crash...and I've ridden it hard, endo'd, wrapped the handlebars around trees. I am beginning to think this bike really is bulletproof. And did I mention sexy-looking?
